Jaw Surgery FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

We believe informed patients make confident decisions. Here are answers to some of the most common questions regarding jaw surgery and facial correction procedures.

Single Jaw Surgery: Approximately 2–3 hours

Double Jaw Surgery: Approximately 5–6 hours

The duration varies depending on the complexity of the case and surgical planning.
Most patients stay in the hospital for 1–2 days after surgery before continuing recovery comfortably at home.
The first few days involve swelling and mild to moderate discomfort, which is well managed with medications. Most major swelling and pain improve significantly within 7–10 days.
Most patients can return to office work, school, or routine daily activities within 10–14 days, depending on the nature of their work and recovery progress.
Strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, and intense exercise should be avoided for approximately 6–8 weeks after surgery to allow proper healing.

In some occlusal cases, temporary jaw fixation or elastic guidance may be required for 2–3 weeks to support healing and bite stabilization.
Orthognathic surgery is a highly specialized and technically advanced procedure. When performed by experienced maxillofacial surgeons following established surgical protocols, it is considered safe and predictable.
As with any surgery, certain risks and complications can occur. The most common temporary effect is numbness in parts of the face, lips, or chin due to nerve healing.

In most patients, sensation gradually improves over 3–6 months. In rare cases, some degree of numbness may persist permanently.

Other uncommon risks include infection, bleeding, delayed healing, relapse, or bite changes, all of which are carefully monitored and managed during follow-up care.
Yes. Orthognathic surgery not only improves function and bite alignment but can also significantly enhance facial balance, symmetry, and overall aesthetics.

Many patients experience improved confidence and quality of life following treatment.
In most cases, braces or aligners are required before and sometimes after surgery to properly align the teeth and achieve the best functional and aesthetic results.
The overall treatment duration varies from patient to patient, but comprehensive orthodontic and surgical treatment commonly takes between 12–24 months.
Most jaw surgeries are performed entirely from inside the mouth, meaning there are usually no visible external scars.
You may be a candidate for orthognathic surgery if you experience:

• Difficulty chewing or biting
• Jaw asymmetry
• Protruding or recessed jaws
• Sleep-related breathing issues
• Facial imbalance
• Severe bite problems that cannot be corrected with braces alone

A detailed clinical and radiographic evaluation is required to determine suitability.
